One player broke the 300+ mark. Eight other players scored over 200+ mark. Three players managed to play all 9 games. The best 6/9 scored counted.
Nigel scored 345 points in total over the period. This is new territory for any our players.
When all the calculations were done with a score of 262 in the best 6 of 9 Nigel is our new first-time winner of Competition D 2019. Congratulations Nigel on a wonderful total. His total included two max. 52 pointers. We will present the trophy in the near future, probably before Christmas, if we can get enough people to Olive's Room for a coffee and presentation. Otherwise it will be at the first day's play in January.
Mike secured second place and Catherine a very creditable third. Yvonne featured in the top ten and new-comer Gerry came in tenth.

Tony, Mike and Tom had a brief but productive meeting with Mick Harford, Parks Superintendent. St. Anne's Park after Boules today.. We had lobbied him by text and e-mail recently to meet us regarding the condition of the pistes with a view to an upgrade as soon as possible. As he put it 'You are pushing an open door' as they agree the Pistes need a refurbishment. There are new toilets in the pipeline for construction between the current Pistes and the Playground on the boules side of the pathway. Budgets allowing, we were left with the impression that the Parks may look favourably at our proposals but we will have a meeting with the Parks officials as soon as their diary permits. Below is a copy of the most recent e-mail sent on your behalf:
To whom it concerns, [ Mick Harford et al.]
Please have a look at our blog for the past number of years
to educate yourself regarding the activity of approximately
thirty senior citizens, weekly, in their endeavour to remain
active while aging by playing Boules / Petanque.
The following photographs show the current state of the
Boules Pistes in St. Anne’s Park, Raheny.
Considering that we ourselves have maintained the pistes for
the past number of years by
[ raking leaves, weeding, edging, mud clearance, upgrading
the signage etc.] we think we now need to see
some supportive action from the parks department.
The drainage and compaction problems have worsened over the
past couple of years to the extent that
the playing surface is akin to playing on a roadway and is
now not truly fit for purpose.
Our original excitement at the response to a request for an
upgrade to the facility in 2017 soon disappeared when the unsuitable
grade grit was, without consultation, spread over an already
compacted surface. The inevitable happened when no drainage
facility was provided. Water lodged in the rear of
Piste 1 and 2 and mud from the surrounding, raised ground migrated onto the
gravel
creating ponds of muddy water in even slightly wet
conditions.
An appropriate response to our repeated requests would have
been the upgrade of the facility to a standard similar to the recent
installation
in Alden Park by Fingal Co. Co.
We now wish Dublin City Council Parks section to meet with
us, as soon as possible, to discuss the re-development of the facility in St.
Anne’s Park to an acceptable standard. The positives are the proximity to
the Car Park; the access to toilets and the chance to meet over a coffee in
Olive’s Room after play.
We would want to be involved in the planning process with a
proper input into the design, planning and implementation of any development.
At this stage we would envisage an upgrade of the existing
Pistes and the provision of a couple more. The attached outline map
provides the basis for discussion on the provision of a facility that will be
used by generations to come.
Proper drainage and layering of the strata is crucial to any
refurbishment / redevelopment. The wooden surrounds need to be replaced
as they are slippery and dangerous in Winter. Extra benches are
needed. The overhead trees need to be checked for diseased branches as
recently we were fortunate not to be underneath when a tree fell between
pistes.
We look forward to meeting your officials in the very
near future.
Many thanks,
Tony Watkins, Mike Deegan and Tom Donnellan
[St Anne’s Boules Group ]
